Born to Learn is an organization registered in Tanzania since 2011 with the aim to provide education to all children in need, and to improve their development and individual strength.
„Mama Sam“, Samantha Peñalver, the British/ Spanish founder of the association, is managing the project with incredible firepower and dedication. The children and young adults from the villages around who often couldn’t visit school in the past due to a lack of resources get here any kind of support. A hot meal, assistance for homework, qualified teaching lessons. As well they learn about a safe environment and to respect the nature. The classes reach from kindergarden to preparation courses for colleges or university in the best case. Even afterwards the young adults always stay in the Born to Learn Family, they get support in getting jobs or to maintain their lives during studies.
The project where the W. Wegener Foundation is deeply engaged as a main sponsor is about an educational program especially for young women, who are prepared and trained one year in culture, good behavior, computer skills, creativity and self-consciousness, with the aim to develop their individual strength to maintain their lives. The Betheli Hospital and Children’s Home is beneath others run by the German doctor Ute Trautwein, who lives in Tanzania since many years, putting all her power into these facilities near Kigoma at Tanganjika Lake. We as the W. Wegener Foundation are mainly engaged into a special project among the multitude of activities around hospital and children home.
Still too often, it happens that a mother is passing away during giving birth to a new-born. The father or family is not always capable to grow this child especially in the first months of its life without the needed mother milk. So it happens the babies are given into the custodial care of the hospital, with the result, that they are sometimes not taken back by the family later for several reasons.
The idea was born to found a project where the children stay with their father or the remaining family with the support and assistance of the helpers from Betheli. Nurses are needed, and a transport system, to bring milk and nappies to the involved families, and to teach them how to care for the baby. This project started successfully, and the first 20 children have already been able to return to their families, where they will continue to receive support, and more will follow by help of the W. Wegener Foundation.
The engaged private person Angela decided to dedicate her life to the many children without parents and families in the Manyara Region. She founded a small place near to the main safari route to Serengeti, buying a ground and building a house. Year for year she enlarged the area and nowadays is giving a home to 40-50 children. They get their daily meals, they are sent to school, and they have been given a family to feel home.
The task to maintain this home and to keep things going is a daily struggle. Sponsors have to be found, because the state doesn’t offer much care for the homeless children.
We visited this place many times and are convinced they deserve our support. The W. Wegener Foundation built a playground, bought some goats to start a troope, and several times per year send hygienic articles and other basic demand to the Happy Home.
It will be our aim to focus our attention on education and progress of the children in the orphanage. We will follow up their development at school and will assist those who strive for further learning.
This orphanage in the city of Arusha is caring for about 50 children in a really narrow place. Some of them are disabled and need special care. The building is old and offering only unhealthy conditions of living.
We bring them hygienic goods and basic food which is needed, as well we help in cases of emergency. Lately the water pipe was leaking and lots of water were running out. Since they couldn’t pay the huge amount for water, the provider stopped the water provision.
We helped them out and paid the water invoice. As well we helped with paying the half year rent for the house which was due and couldn’t be paid. Mainly needed now is a new building, and we will share with support.
This small orphan house in the outer circle of Arusha, in a poor environment, is providing care for about 15 Children, some being disabled. They receive really loving care, but the lack of everything is obvious. We try to offer support by sending some hygienic goods and basic food on a regular schedule. The leaders of the orphanage try to offer their children to build up abilities, awake creativity and motivate them to put effort on school education.
